Everyone is familiar with the classic Bugs Bunny cartoon pitting Bugs Bunny against Elmer Fudd in a Wagnerian opera, "What's Opera Doc" (Chuck Jones, 1958). But the idea was explored over a decade earlier by writer Mike Maltese in a cartoon directed by Friz Freleng. "Herr Meets Hare" (Freleng, 1945) features Bugs tangling with a Nazi (caricature of Hermann Goering), and was released mere months before Germany surrendered in World War II. The real Goering was tried and convicted in 1946 of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials, and sentenced to hanging. He committed suicide the night before he was to be hanged.
